INTENT 

Our intention is that, when children leave St. Stephens Catholic Primary School and Nursery, they do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active role in today’s society.

We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it.

What do we want for our pupils?

• Develop a confidence in sharing their own thoughts and opinions with others
• Develop skills and attributes to keep themselves healthy and safe
• Develop an attitude of a responsible global citizen
• To show tolerance of others' beliefs, religions and life choices.
• To build positive, respectful relationships with other people
• To become confident, independent and responsible citizens who can contribute to the life of the school and community.

IMPLEMENTATION

• Clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum and latest statutory DfE guidance Sept 2020.
• The PSE curriculum has three core learning themes: health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world. It also incorporates the RSHE policy and the scheme of work identifies links to British Values, Cultural Capital, SMSC (Virtues to Live By) and schools Key skills into the curriculum.
• Children have access to key knowledge, language and meanings to understand PSE and to use across the curriculum.
• PSE focused whole school displays
• Wider Curriculum - All subjects make a link to PSE, BV, SMSC and the language is used consistently by all staff.
• Assemblies
• Whole school, Key Stage and class assemblies always make a link to PSE, British Values and SMSC
• Parent Consultation
• Parents are informed of the content of the RSHE programme of work during the class transition meetings, planned information sessions, and further support / clarification will be given if required.

At St Stephen's we provide opportunities for pupils to take on roles of responsibility and represent others through our School Council and our Mini Vinnies.

EXPECTED IMPACT

• Children will know more and remember more about PSE.
• Children will recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty.
• Children will demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school – attendance will be at least in-line with national and behaviour will be good.
• The large majority of children will achieve age related expectations across the wider curriculum in addition to the core subjects.
• Children will develop positive and healthy relationship with their peers both now and in the future.
• Children will understand the physical aspects involved in RSHE at an age appropriate level.
• Children will have respect for themselves and others.
• Children will have positive body images.
